Me and my son took a ride through the port of Antwerp. On the left bank of the river Schelde, that is.
During the week there's trucks driving on and off but in the weekend it's dead like a ghost town.

This part of the harbour used to be wonderful farm land. The typical wide flat landscape with fields and meadows you know from the paintings of the Flemish primitives.
Corn fields that turned bright yellow by august. Long endless roads, the occasional tree.

In the 70's, when I was a kid, some people decided that this wonderful piece of nature would have to make way for the expanding port of Antwerp. Well, mostly for the benefit of some people's pockets.

Breaks my heart to see the destruction.
Fertile clay filled with 6 metres of sand. And on top of this factories and warehouses. An oasis of natural colors and smells turned into a desert of sand and concrete with the smell of diesel and chemical gasses. Sickening.
